Most everyone associates February with Valentine’s Day. February is also National Heart Month! And while wellness should be a year round priority, this month is a great time to focus on cardiovascular health.

Why is this so important? The heart pumps blood around the body and is the muscle at the center of the circulation system. It delivers oxygen and nutrients to cells and is responsible for removing waste products. There are many ways to improve and maintain heart health, not just this month.

How can you get started? Get moving. Not only does exercise energize, it helps to lower blood pressure and stress for a healthier heart. Eating well can help reduce the risk of developing coronary heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. Healthy diet choices include plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Conscious drink choices are beneficial as well. Focus on drinking more water and fewer sugary beverages such as soda.

Feeling overwhelmed? Reducing stress is also key to heart health. Meditate, take part in a yoga class or make time for other activities that help aid in relaxation and promoting a sense of well-being and tranquility.

How can hygiene help? Handwashing is an often-overlooked way of promoting heart health by reducing the risk of illness and infection.

What can I do better? Quit smoking and try to avoid secondhand smoke.

February is all heart! Practicing heart-healthy habits can not only help you live longer, but live better. There’s no better time to start putting your best heart forward.
