Senior Living Operator Sees Resident Engagement Take Flight With Monarch Butterfly Garden

A passion for butterflies, gardening, education and conservation has led to the formation of a senior living resident-led club that allows older adults to continue to pursue lifelong passions and give back to the greater community.

Masonicare at Ashlar Village, a continuing care retirement / life plan community  in Wallingford, CT, recently hosted a community event to celebrate the launch of its Monarch butterfly garden. The garden was developed by the resident-led Ashlar Butterfly Club, a group dedicated to promoting local pollinator habitats and raising awareness about Monarch butterfly migration and conservation.

The club formed last fall, starting with a simple sign-up sheet that quickly grew to a group of 33 residents, according to Kim Magalhaes, Masonicare vice president of residential and at home services.
