Annual Appeal

When donating to a particular charity, one should ask some important questions -- questions like, "Are my gifts being utilized properly?" or "How much of my gift is actually benefiting the people I want to help?" For Ben Isaacson, there's no guesswork involved in giving to the Masonicare Annual Appeal.

Gifts to the Annual Appeal benefit Masonicare’s long-term care residents as well as our home health and hospice patients in financial need throughout the state.

"When I get a call asking me to donate to another charity," Ben says, "how do I know that $.85 on the dollar isn't going to pay the person on the other end of the phone? But I know I can always go down to Masonicare Health Center and see how my gifts are being spent."

Thanks to donors' support of the Annual Appeal, Masonicare is able to provide residents and patients in need with items and services that aren't covered by any other sources. Recent purchases made possible by gifts to the Annual Appeal include software and equipment used in LSVT LOUD (speech) therapy to treat speech disorders for home health  patients with Parkinson's disease, resident transportation, social work visits, and spiritual care services.

Another longtime donor, Carol Gladden, has been giving to the Annual Appeal for years in appreciation for the way Masonicare treated her parents, the late Arlton and Joan Porter. Arlton was a resident of the Health Center when it was still known as the Masonic Home and Hospital.

"We loved how the staff there encouraged my father to participate in activities," Carol said, "even if he needed help getting around. He joined the bell choir and was in a singing group. Music seems to reach most people and it certainly reached my father. It was wonderful."

Indeed, Masonicare's recreation therapists see the transformative power that music can have on residents and patients in their care. Carol is pleased to know that gifts to the Annual Appeal help subsidize indoor and outdoor concerts as well as twice-weekly visits by strolling musicians to the long-term care, short-term rehab and memory enhancement (dementia care) units.

"When my dad first arrived at the Health Center," Carol said, "his doctors didn't think he'd live 30 days. He was there for eight years. He received such excellent care."
