Wallingford, CT (June 7, 2016)…The twelfth annual Masonicare at Ashlar Village Residents' Scholarship Fund presentation held on Sunday, June 5, in the Hartog Activity Center at Masonicare at Ashlar Village, Masonicare's Continuing Care Retirement Community on Cheshire Road in Wallingford.

 

            Twenty-three young men and women, who are either employees of Masonicare at Ashlar Village or the children of employees, were honored during the presentation.  A total of $31,000 in scholarship funds was raised this year and distributed at the special awards ceremony.  Hilde Sager, Executive Director of Residential Services, offered welcoming remarks and scholarship recipients were introduced by David Gessert, Chairman of the Ashlar Village Board of Directors.  

 

The young men and women receiving scholarships this year are Elizabeth Akier, Stephany Arendt, Matthew Baum, Maria Bianco, Devyn Brewster, Samantha Colberg, Carley Fitzgerald, Asia Hutchins, Danielle McIntyre, Amanda Mendoza, Daniel Morrison, Olivia Ney, Zachary Rezendes, Kevin Rodriguez, Hailee Schmidt, Jennifer Stewart, Jonathan Stone, Christina Ward, Sean Wilder, Jr., Daniel Zakrzewski, Jeffrey Zakrzewski, Samantha Zeoli, and Elizabeth Zielinski.

 

The recipients are students at Quinnipiac University, Southern Connecticut State University, Central Connecticut State University, Eastern Connecticut State University, The University of New Haven, Sacred Heart University, Gateway Community College, Middlesex Community College, Naugatuck Valley Community College, Emmanuel College, High Point University, University of Saint Joseph and Duquesne University.

 

Special thanks were extended to residents Irving Pease and Bob Bissell, residents Phillip and Donna Lint, and Al and Marie Scharf, the family of deceased resident Donald F. Warner, and the family of deceased resident Blanche Newman, for their generous donations of special memorial and appreciation awards.

 

Masonicare at Ashlar Village residents established the Scholarship Fund in 2004 to provide educational scholarships for young people who either work at Ashlar Village or are children of employees.   The funds are raised in a variety of ways, but mainly through the sale of unique, handmade craft and clothing items in the Ashlar Village Specialty shop.  The items are made by residents of Ashlar Village, and the Specialty Shop is manned and stocked solely by resident volunteers.
