October: Message from the President – Stephen B. McPherson

October 1, 2013

McPherson 2013The evening of October 10 was a very special one for Masonicare.  We held our first all-employee, all-affiliate Employee Appreciation Event.  It was a great way to say Thank You to  our employees for the outstanding care they provide to our patients, residents, families and each other every day.  It takes all of us together to make this company what it is.

Held at the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, there was music, dancing, food – and a good number of tributes.  We recognized the service of 153 employees from across the Masonicare continuum who were having “milestone” anniversaries of  10 – 15 – 20 – 25 – 30 – and even 35 years.  Our 35-year honorees were Irene Waterman, CNA at Masonicare Health Center, and June Lazzara, LPN with Masonicare at Newtown. We also gave a special “shout out” for those second shift employees who could not be with us because they were on the job taking care of our patients and residents.

We also presented our very first Club 332 Award, created to recognize a team of 2 or more employees who went above and beyond to demonstrate the mission of Masonicare.  This prestigious new award was presented to Holly Rychling, Clinical Care Transitions Coordinator for Masonicare Home Health, Karen Prestwood, Physician in our Acute Care Hospital Unit, Michele Sutton, Clinical Supervisor at Home Health, Jennie Eckert of Home Health’s Intake Department and Jessica Waters, Social Worker at Masonicare Health Center. This inter-affiliate group pulled off an amazing feat, facilitating a safe discharge to home care for a medically compromised 99 year-old in our Acute Care Unit so that the next day he was at home surrounded by family and friends as he turned 100 years old.

That night I quoted from one of the many letters I receive from grateful families: I cannot say enough about the quality of the people who cared for my mother.  Everyone mirrored what I believe is a MASONICARE ATTITUDE.

Our employees are remarkable and I am very proud of them.  And because of the vision of Connecticut Masons nearly 150 years ago, Masonicare is here with employees dedicated to deliver on the promise to “help, aid and assist.”
